Brick Mural Graphics Transform Entire Building Exterior

Covered in snow 10,860 square feet of blank brick exterior at the Galleria Mall in Edina, MN waited for spring. The mall known for its luxury shopping experience and restaurants was looking for a way to launch the spring shopping season and wake people out of winter hibernation. In years past they partnered with florists to install beautiful sculptural floral bouquets turning the interior of the mall into a garden oasis.

This year, the Galleria wanted to go a step further to wow shoppers and draw them in by completely covering the brick exterior of the building in flowers. The mall reached out to 40 VISUALS for a solution to bring the floral exhibit outside and shoppers in.

Before and After: Brick Wrap Vinyl applied from ground level to the roof of the Galleria Mall. This 38ft wide by 14.5ft high brick wall was covered in 9 4ft wide by 14.5″h panels with clear backing that virtually disappears allowing the brick behind it to show through when heat applied. The 40 VISUALS team proposed using clear brick wrap vinyl which is specially suited to conform to indoor or outdoor rough surfaces like brick to cover the mall. It would have taken ages for an artist to hand paint the entire building. Using brick wrap the Galleria was able to go from blank to bloom over a total of 67 hours hours using a team of professional installers. When the brick wrap material is applied with heat it conforms to the shape of the brick creating a look that is almost indistinguishable from real paint.

The result was a total of 210 panels in sizes 50″w x 138-320″h sections of clear vinyl brick wrap that turned the exterior of the building into a giant hand painted looking mural. Clear material allowed for the design to be intricate without having to contour cut the material into multiple small pieces that are more time consuming to install. The design was able to go up in solid panels, but with the clear material allowing the brick underneath to show through it gives the effect of individually painted elements. The artwork was also printed using white ink to create bright saturated colors that really pop off the brick.

Go Big and Bold

For the artwork to make the Galleria Mall’s vision come to life they worked with local artist LindseyMadeThis to “flower bomb” the entire building exterior. The fun bold color floral designs Lindsay created paired perfectly with the painted on look of brick wrap vinyl. The exuberant candy, gems, lips, and blossoms turned the mall into a bright beacon drawing peoples attention from the roadway. It then held people’s attention and created social media buzz as a highly interactive mural.

The fun designs were prime backdrops for shoppers to take a selfie. The mall encouraged interaction on social media by creating a custom floral filter and promoted #GalleriaFloralPop. The exterior design was also tied in to a variety of events at the mall throughout the summer under the theme FloralPop.

Large expanses of brick act as blank canvases, perfect for instagram worthy brick wall murals. Murals around the country have made areas destinations just for their social media photo ops. Putting artwork in a public space has a way of inviting the public to interact with it. Anyone who saw the artwork on the mall was shocked initially thinking that the mall had been completely painted!

The transformation even caught the attentions of several local news outlets, the Star Tribune and Sun Current. The beauty of the vinyl decal material used to create this painted brick effect is that is can be removed or changed to remain fresh.

Vinyl for Textured Surfaces – Installations

Professional Installation is a service that we offer to customers in all locations as we work with a nationwide network of installers.. The installation process that turns this vinyl from a normal decal into a painted looking mural involves heating the vinyl with heat guns to 1,000 plus degrees. Then a rubber roller is used to press the vinyl into all the nooks and crannies of the brick and mortar joints. Working in panels melting each into the brick installers are able to create massive seamless looking murals in a matter of hours. Removal is even faster, as the material is heated again to release from the brick with no residue, like it was never there.
