Halloween spending is set to hit a record $13.1 billion this year, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey. That’s up from $11.6 billion in 2024 and surpasses the previous high of $12.2 billion in 2023. Despite concerns about higher prices due to tariffs—79% of shoppers expect costs to rise—73% of consumers still plan to celebrate, keeping participation steady with last year. The most common activities include handing out candy (66%), dressing up (51%), and decorating homes or yards (51%).
Candy remains the top purchase, totaling an expected $3.9 billion, followed by costumes at $4.3 billion, decorations at $4.2 billion, and greeting cards at $0.7 billion. Spending per person has climbed to a new high of $114.45, about $11 more than last year. Discount stores are the most popular shopping destination, now chosen by 42% of consumers, with specialty Halloween stores and online shopping tied at 31%. Overall, retailers are preparing for a strong season as more people invest in both traditional and festive holiday purchases.
