Are LED Signs Worth the Money?

Most people are subjected to an increasing array of advertising in their normal day-to-day lives. Between phones, computers, television, and physical signage, it’s easy for individuals to start tuning some advertising out, especially with dull representations that may not have the vibrancy of digital advertising.

But a newer kind of signage is available today that is just as eye-catching as what you see on a TV or phone screen and that can give a renewed focus to your advertising or the messaging at your place of business. It’s called SEG, or Silicone Edge Graphics, and it’s one of the best new ways to dial up your signage to catch the attention of people inside and outside your restaurant, shop, or venue.

Better yet, because silicone edge graphics work with sleek SEG Light Boxes made of lightweight aluminum, you’ll even get that floating, edge-to-edge look that’s virtually impossible with any other form of physical advertising. Furthermore, the framing that accepts the stretched fabric silicone edge graphics can fit with LED lights to easily be backlit, enhancing visibility and helping to make that signage pop. That makes SEG backlit signs great inside and out, as well as on the road at trade shows and events, where you won’t have to lug around an expensive and fragile TV or other bulky advertising.

What Are SEG Backlit Signs?

Lit from behind by powerful LEDs, SEG Backlit Signs are also known as light boxes, illuminated signs, and fabric signs, but the real secret is inside the lightweight aluminum frames. Outside, SEG Fabric Graphics are stretched over a recessed edge to achieve a tight, drum-like appearance with lights inside shining through and illuminating the SEG fabric printing from the inside out.

When viewed, SEG backlit signs give a look that’s reminiscent of a large HD screen, all without the weight, bezels, and complexity of a cumbersome TV screen. They’re also much more visible from all sorts of angles, which gives them a leg up on those screens that are complicated to install and wire up, as well as to see in certain lighting situations.

Sure, SEG backlit signs are more expensive than traditional flat signage, but that’s not a true apples to apples comparison. Instead, it can help to think about SEG signage as a TV replacement; in that sense, you’ll save a significant amount in purchase costs as well as in management and deployment of your signage over the burden of a large TV.

With ultra-high contrast that rivals the most expensive HD and 4K TVs, backlit SEG signs are bright and bold — perfect for stealing attention whether they’re deployed in a store or out on the floor of a busy conference. Additionally, because SEG signs can be made in just about any orientation or size, they’re the perfect mix of modern tech and traditional signage that can help meet any advertising need.

What’s In a Backlit SEG Frame?

Built from aluminum extrusions, Backlit SEG Frames come with a dedicated lighting channel that provides the ideal amount of light when the sign is lit. It also helps mount the internal lighting equipment away from view and tucked under the print up top. In general, the lighting mechanism should be kept at least an inch and a quarter away from the graphic print, though it depends on the exact lighting used.

A backlit SEG frame also comes with mounting hardware, corner connectors, and reinforcing connectors to yield a rigid and robust frame that will stand up to the rigors of daily use.

Connecting and mounting hardware are compatible with the aluminum extrusions used, and it also depends somewhat on how the sign itself will be hung. Very large frames will need more mounting points while smaller frames may be able to get away with one or two simple hangers in the same way that a picture frame can be easily hung on a wall.

That said, SEG Frame Systems can be wall-mounted, hung freely via a sign bracket or other hardware, as well as freestanding on the floor. Each different installation method requires different hardware, though due to the lightweight nature of SEG frames and graphics, they’re significantly easier to hang and manage over conventional signage.

Now comes the most crucial part of a backlit SEG sign — the lighting. Lights are what will make that SEG sign pop, and the good news is that there are many different types of lightweight lighting solutions that can be used. Compared to traditional light boxes that tend to use heavy and unreliable fluorescent lights, SEG LED backlights are lightweight, require much less power, and are less likely to have any problems in use. They also last much longer than other types of lights and are easily situated to suit your precise need, such as edge lighting, lattice lighting, and backlighting.

With the frames, mounting hardware, and lighting all set, you’ll also need a power supply to help call attention to that beautiful sign. They’re required to convert the high voltage from a power plug into the low voltage needed to run the LED lights, and power supplies are typically chosen to match the voltage and wattage requirements in the frame. On one end they plug into the wall, and on the other they attach to the lights in the frame.

For super-thin frames or larger frames that may require a larger power supply that won’t fit in or on the frame itself, external power supplies can provide power via a wire that connects to the frame itself. Since these external power supplies run hot, they’ll need to be kept in a storage space or a drop ceiling where adequate air flow can help keep the inner workings cool. With some installations, you may need to work with an electrician to establish the best way to power your SEG backlit sign.

The last piece of an SEG sign is the all-important Fabric Graphic and the silicone keder trim. Also known as a silicone bead, it’s the trim that keeps the fabric taut and drum-tight, adding to that impossible, edge-to-edge impression of an SEG sign. The fabric itself is a specialty fabric that is made for light boxes and is typically made from polyester. It’s also ideal for the dye sublimation process that permanently transfers the graphics into the fabric, providing that signature SEG look.

Moreover, the fabric is dense, which works to allow an even lighting effect when viewed from outside the sign. A blockout layer helps keep light inside the frame from leaking out, helping to direct all the light to the front — or front and back in the case of a double-sided backlit SEG sign.

The Benefits of Backlit SEG Signs

One of the best things about Backlit SEG Signs is that they don’t require any kind of external lighting. SEG backlit signs come with their own specialty light boxes that make short work of any visibility issue. At night, that means a vibrant and noticeable sign even in the darkest corners of your store or outside among the elements. That can help bring more patrons into your place of business, call their attention to special promotions, or highlight just about anything else you’d like to share.

Generally, successful advertising signs are rated on four different attributes. They should be detectable, which speaks to whether they can be seen during the day, at night, or even during inclement weather. They should also be conspicuous, meaning that they call attention to themselves and don’t blend in with the background. The third attribute of a successful sign is that it’s legible and easy to read. Finally, signs should be comprehensible, indicating that they’re easily understood.

Compared to other types of advertising, SEG backlit signs do all four extremely well. With the light shining through, they’re highly visible during the day or at night; they’re infinitely noticeable since they give the impression of a humongous, edge-to-edge digital display; they’re easy to read in any circumstance; and they’re also easy to understand since everything is so clear and legible.

That makes SEG backlit signs an ideal feature for storefronts, corporate displays, trade shows and expos, restaurants and bars, sports venues, productions, outdoor events, and anywhere else you need to display a message.

Why Opt For SEG Backlit Signs?

Backlit SEG signs are a great way to present your business in a new light or to highlight your next great promotion or product. You get only a second to make a great impression, and SEGs are one of the best ways to impress with next-level graphics that capture attention and help to put your best foot forward. Compared to using regular signage that lacks depth, color, and vibrancy, incorporating SEG signs is like supercharging your branding and advertising.

From a durability standpoint, SEG backlit signs are highly durable, which is especially desirable if you swap out signage frequently. The aluminum frames are immune to rust and other deterioration, while the dye-sublimated graphics up front won’t quickly fade under use. If a graphic gets dirty it can be washed and dried, most sizes will fit in a standard washing machine and dryer. Better yet, the fabric can be swapped out in just minutes without specialized tools, and that gives you more opportunities to update your branding with the season or to highlight new promotions whenever the need arises. Prints can be folded and stored away when not in use.

While SEGs signs are certainly more expensive than traditional cardstock and flat posters that often manage to fade away into the background or succumb to glare inside most stores, they are incredibly cost effective when compared to large HDTVs and other light boxes that are also incredibly heavy and difficult to manage.

Maintaining Your SEG Backlit Signs

Those that haven’t had a chance to own or use SEG backlit signs may have questions about their longevity or everyday use. That’s because traditional backlit signs tend not to degrade gracefully — certain lights burn out, and flickering is also rampant.

But with SEG backlit signs, you won’t have to deal with anything of the sort. The LEDs built into the aluminum frames are long-lasting and don’t contain glowing filaments that can break down or otherwise deteriorate. That means they won’t flicker or lose light over time. Even if something does go wrong, you can easily replace all or sections of the lights inside the frame. On the front face, the graphics are printed using a dye sublimation method that actually penetrates the fabric, thereby reducing fading and other deterioration.

Besides, if there’s ever a problem, the fabric itself can be swapped out in just minutes. No complicated electrical knowledge is needed as the fabric simply pops off the aluminum frame, revealing the structure of the sign inside. Backlit SEG Light Boxes can beautifully illuminate graphics 24 hours a day for years on end.
