Biotechnology company Asimov wanted to add a little life to their Boston, Massachusetts laboratory with small photography to complement their work in a big way. The state-of-the-art company transformed their lab into a microscopic art gallery with five huge 6-foot backlit circular silicone edge graphic (SEG) fabric prints to line the hallways and common areas.

Going Round

This project is especially unique, not only because of the artwork but because of the custom circular SEG fabric prints and lightboxes. The circular fabric needed to be precisely measured and cut to ensure a perfect fit. Too big and the fabric will be loose and have wrinkles, too small and the fabric won’t fit. We also used a stretchier silicone beading for this project for a more precise fit for the circular artwork.

For a clean and polished look, a power outlet was placed behind the lightbox frames for a simple plug-and-play install, complete with a power switch on the lightboxes to easily turn the lightboxes on and off.

Every Detail Matters

The creative for the project features five microscopic photographs of organic life like never seen before. Three of the images were featured in Nikon’s Small World Competition, with the human skin cell photographed by Dr. Bram van den Broek of The Netherlands Cancer Institute at 40x magnification winning the competition in 2017. The other image by Stefano Barone from Diatom Shop in Italy features 65 fossilized zooplankton arranged by hand at 100x magnification, which placed 16th in the 2016 competition. A third image took 11th place in 2015 and features fern sorus at 20x magnification by Rogelio Moreno.
