In the busy environment of healthcare facilities, interior design plays a crucial role in the overall experience of patients and staff. Recognizing this, River City Art Solutions partnered with 40 VISUALS to make their art and interior design vision come to life for Corewell Health, a leading healthcare provider in Michigan. In this blog, we’ll take a look at the new wall covering at Corewell Health’s Blodgett Hospital campus and how thoughtful interior design, particularly in medical settings, can make a significant difference.

Fixing Bare Spaces with Art

River City Art Solutions, based in Grand Rapids, MI, specializes in curating and delivering high-quality artwork for various spaces. The art consulting firm works with local artists and specializes in healthcare, hospitality and contract projects for a variety of clients. Their expertise lies in understanding the essence of a place and complementing the space with art. For the Blodgett Hospital project, they brought their creative vision to life, choosing a wall covering that would uplift the hospital’s atmosphere.

Corewell Health: Making Michigan Healthier

Corewell Health is the product of a merger between Spectrum Health and Beaumont Health, two leading healthcare systems in Michigan. Blodgett Hospital is part of their extensive network and is nationally recognized for its commitment to high-quality, safe healthcare. The award-winning hospital first opened its doors in 1846 and has been a staple in the community ever since. The recent renovations at the administrative area of Blodgett Hospital reflect their dedication to creating a welcoming and inspiring environment.

Using Walls as a Blank Canvas

The centerpiece of this renovation is a 27′ wall covering, designed to radiate positivity and vibrancy. This abstract artwork, rich in orange, yellow, and green hues, is not just a visual treat but also a source of inspiration and energy for everyone passing by. The design, divided into seven 4′ wall covering panels, perfectly complements the hospital’s interior design, adding a modern and refreshing touch to the historic space.

Installing Adhesive Vinyl Wall Coverings

The installation, expertly handled by BCS Creative, involved high-tack removable adhesive vinyl media. This material was chosen for its longevity, value, and ease of installation, making it an ideal choice for commercial wall coverings, especially in a high-traffic area like a hospital.

The wallpaper installation process first involved cleaning the wall surface to ensure the vinyl would properly adhere to the surface. The panels were then taped to the wall and meticulously aligned to ensure the vinyl was properly installed. Each panel was then adhered to the wall, starting from the top and using a squeegee to smooth out any air bubbles. All seven panels were aligned for a seamless and continuous look that tied the space together.

The Importance of Signage in Hospitals

In hospitals, signage goes beyond mere functionality; it’s about creating an environment that is both informative and healing. Wall coverings, especially those with calming and uplifting designs, play a vital role in this. They not only guide and inform but also contribute significantly to the hospital’s interior design. The use of vibrant colors and abstract patterns in the Blodgett Hospital project serves as a perfect example of how hospital wall coverings can transcend their traditional roles.

Effective hospital signage, including medical office signage and medical signage, is integral to the overall medical facility design. It ensures a sense of direction and ease for patients and visitors while contributing to the aesthetic appeal of the space. In the context of hospital interior design, the choice of wall coverings and their installation should align with the overall design language of the facility, as seen in the seamless integration at Blodgett Hospital.

Next Steps

This project at Corewell Health’s Blodgett Hospital campus in collaboration with River City Art Solutions showcases how art and design, when thoughtfully integrated, can transform a space. The vibrant wall covering not only brightens up the area but also adds a new dimension to hospital interior design.

This project stands as a testament to the power of art in health and wellness environments, reinforcing the importance of art and design considerations in medical facility design. This collaboration highlights how signage solutions like vinyl wall coverings can significantly impact the aesthetic of healthcare facilities, ultimately enhancing the experience for everyone.
