Art Installation NYC

74Wythe Brooklyn, NY

Art has a way of communicating the heart behind a social change in an engaging way. Often it becomes the voice when words are distant. Artist Arianna Margulis beautifully illustrated such a piece for the emerging multi-level venue space 74Wythe in Brooklyn, NY called #74wythefamilarfaces. This piece was a collaborative photography piece that honored the Black Lives Matter movement and healthcare workers involved in the COVID-19 pandemic. We were pleased to partner in this movement by providing the outdoor vinyl for textured surfaces to wrap the 15,000 square foot building. This outdoor wall wrap vinyl allowed for a durable paint-like print for the outdoor textured building. The 74Wythe is set to open late summer with a continued emphasis on community involvement and charity support.

Installation Process

The impactful images featured on this installation included healthcare workers, difference makers, doctors, nurses, and protestors. For this semi-permanent installation, wall wrap vinyl was the chosen medium. This adhesive vinyl material is perfect for indoor or outdoor surfaces with a durable bond to textured surfaces. The bright prints allowed for a strong message on the existing grey exterior. To achieve the same look by hand painting this type of photographic imagery it would have taken a skilled artist countless hours.

Installation

1.

The installation process included removing the paper backing to allow the adhesive back to be exposed. Separating the artwork into pieces made each step more manageable and easier to handle when installing.

2.

With even pressure, a roller smooths the surface of the vinyl to create initial contact with the textured wall. It is only after heat is applied that this adhesion will remain semi-permanent.

3.

Once the pieces were lightly applied, a controlled heat gun was used to warm the wall wrap vinyl to be mold to the textured wall. With applied heat, it bonds and conforms to uneven surfaces. To remove heat is again applied to release the adhesive cleanly from the wall surface.

The final product resulted in an eye-catching and socially relevant artwork installation. In a time of uncertainty, it is community collaboration such as the 74Wythe that makes a difference.
