SEG Light Boxes: Severance Apple TV Set Design

If you’re a fan of the show Severance on Apple TV, then you know that the set design plays a key role creating the eerie and suspenseful atmosphere of this workplace thriller.

Eye on the Ball Productions Inc partnered with 40 VISUALS for a variety of custom SEG Light Boxes and Fabric Graphic Prints to use in their set design for scenes filmed at York Studios in New York. SEG, silicone edge graphics, are fabric prints finished with a rubber like gasket that fits into an aluminum frame channel and can be backlit or non-lit.

In a previous blog post we highlighted the light boxes and close up prints of characters smiles we produced that appeared in the series trailer. We also speculated about how custom sliding door and spinning cube SEG Light Boxes would play out in the show as well. We had to wait until the final episode to find out!

Sliding SEG Light Boxes

Characters mingle as (10) 108″w x 108″h freestanding cube light boxes with (40) larger than life backlit fabric prints of the main character, Helly, spin. The effect is jarring, leaving the audience questioning what is real.

Spinning Cube SEG Light Boxes

A large 210″w x 105″h light box splits in half and slides open for Helly to make her grand stage entrance. The cube light boxes mentioned above are also scattered throughout the room, adding to the feeling of unease and disorientation.

Freestanding “L” SEG Light Boxes

To created rooms within rooms in the event room space (6) 108″w x 108″h double sided light boxes were connected together at 90″ with a mitered corner to form freestanding L-shapes. The shape of these light boxes and add a maze like quality to the scene.

The Severance set design team did an amazing job of creating a space that was both visually stunning and unsettling. We were thrilled to be a part of it!

These light boxes were key to giving the event space the chilling ethereal glow needed for the final episode of season one. Backlit fabric graphics are often used in set design to create similar effects and can be produced in virtually any size or shape to meet the needs of your project.
