What You Need to Know
Staple Pigeon opened its Shanghai flagship on Huaihai Middle Road, one of the city’s top shopping destinations, with a store designed by multidisciplinary studio DESIGN AT PRESENT. The brand’s iconic pigeon does double duty here as a design guide, linking New York street culture with Shanghai’s layered urban history. Outside, a vivid pink perforated metal facade wraps the storefront while a monumental pigeon sculpture bursts through it, stopping people on the street. Inside, hanging racks echo New York scaffolding, patinated brick surfaces nod to Shanghai’s older buildings and reclaimed wood and metal mesh carry the material story throughout.
A lounge area with pink seating and a pigeon poop rug softens the industrial edge, while a mosaic-tiled checkout counter adds color against the dark reclaimed timber backdrop. The fitting rooms are the most unexpected part of the store. The larger room has an LED screen embedded in the floor that loops aerial footage of both New York and Shanghai skylines, putting you in the perspective of the pigeon looking down at the two cities. The smaller room is wrapped in timber and pink carpet, designed to feel like the inside of a pigeon house.
