What You Need to Know
A&W Restaurants announced a new restaurant prototype it calls a “modern heritage” design, drawing inspiration from the brand’s original roadside root beer stands and classic diner locations. The new footprint ranges from 2,200 to 2,800 square feet with seating for 40 to 70 guests, balancing a functional layout with a stronger dine-in experience. The design blends timeless Americana with contemporary architecture and is built to be flexible enough to work across different market sizes.
The prototype is meant to set the foundation for A&W’s future US development as the brand continues expanding its franchise network. CEO Betsy Schmandt said the new design reflects the brand’s commitment to handcrafted quality and genuine hospitality at a time when many quick-service restaurants are moving toward a more transactional experience. A&W has been making root beer fresh in every restaurant since 1919, and the new design puts that heritage front and center alongside its Hometown Hospitality model.
