Window signage serves as a touchpoint between your store and potential customers. It’s often the first visual cue that draws traffic into your space, guiding foot traffic and improving brand visibility. If you’re the do-it-yourself type, installing window graphics can be tedious and frustrating, but with our do’s and don’t guide to installing adhesive vinyl on windows, you’ll learn how to install vinyl window film for a flawless, long-lasting window graphic.

Types of Vinyl Window Films

There are many different self adhesive vinyls for windows and it’s important to choose the right type of adhesive vinyl to achieve your desired effect. Opaque adhesive vinyl film provides complete coverage, ideal for privacy and bold designs, but it blocks natural light. Perforated vinyl window film has small holes in the film which offers a one-way vision, allowing those inside to see out while displaying graphics to outsiders. Ultra-clear film ensures transparency, making it perfect for subtle branding without obstructing the view. Frosted vinyl has a translucent, etched-glass appearance, providing privacy while still allowing natural light into the space.

If you’re unsure which window product is right for you, our team of signage enthusiasts can help you find the perfect match for your space.

Do’s and Don’ts of Installing Window Vinyl

DO

Clean the Glass Surface Thoroughly

Begin by cleaning the glass with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol solution, then rinsing with water, to remove dust, grease and debris. If existing vinyl was removed, ensure any adhesive residue is completely removed. Make sure the surface is completely clean and dry before applying the vinyl. Neglecting this step can lead to peeling or bubbles over time. Avoid harsh cleaners that might damage the glass.
DON’T

Apply (Most Films) in Extreme Temperatures

Avoid installing vinyl in temperatures generally below 40°F or above 90°F (although each material has a specific application range), as adhesive performance can be compromised, leading to failure. Some films can be installed in temperatures as low as -5°F. Be mindful that direct sunlight can heat the glass surface beyond the ambient temperature, affecting adhesion.
DO

Use a Wet Application (If Suitable)

For larger graphics, spray a mixture of water and a drop of baby shampoo onto the glass before applying the vinyl. This technique allows for repositioning before the adhesive sets. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of water on the glass surface! After placement, use a squeegee to remove excess water and air bubbles.
DON’T

Peel Off the Backing All at Once

Removing the backing entirely can make the vinyl difficult to handle, increasing the risk of misalignment, creases and can cause dirt and debris to stick to the adhesive backing. Instead, peel the backing gradually as you apply the vinyl to maintain control.
DO

Use the Right Tools

Equip yourself with a squeegee, sharp utility knife and masking tape for aligning the graphic. A bubble-free roller or applicator can also be used for larger installations. Carefully trim any excess vinyl around the edges with the utility knife, leaving a 1/8″ gap between the graphic and window trim, for a clean finish with properly sealed edges.
DON’T

Rush the Process

Take your time. Hurrying can result in misalignment, trapped bubbles, and wrinkles. Peel the backing gradually, pressing the vinyl down to avoid bubbles, starting from the top and working your way down.
DO

Apply Even Pressure

Use a squeegee to press the vinyl firmly onto the glass, moving in straight, overlapping strokes to eliminate air bubbles and creases.
DON’T

Clean with Harsh Cleaners

After installation, avoid cleaning the vinyl with harsh chemicals. Use mild, non-abrasive cleaners for maintenance to preserve the integrity and appearance of the window vinyl.
DO

Peel Backer Away From Contour-Cut Graphics

Peeling the backer away from the graphic, instead of the other way around, ensures that the graphic won’t curl before application and contour-cut details remain on the transfer sheet.
