New York City has seen its fair share of unique storefronts, but Louis Vuitton has taken luxury retail signage to a whole new level — literally. As its flagship store at 1 East 57th Street undergoes a major transformation, the luxury brand has wrapped the construction site in a massive display of oversized, iconic trunks. The result is a bold, one-of-a-kind building that’s impossible to ignore.
A Luxury Landmark in the Making
Situated on Fifth Avenue, the Louis Vuitton flagship is undergoing a renovation that will nearly double its size, creating a high-end shopping experience. Rather than settling for a generic scaffolding cover, the brand used custom signage to turn the entire structure into a tribute to its heritage — after all, Louis Vuitton first made its name as a trunk maker in the 19th century. Now, in the heart of Manhattan, those signature trunks have been scaled up to building size, turning a temporary construction site into a branding and visual merchandising opportunity that can’t be missed.
The luggage facade was designed by Louis Vuitton’s in-house team and wraps the entire construction area. It consists of six stacked grey trunks and is a nod to the brand’s Trianon Grey canvas, a light grey textile that dates back to the 1800s. Details such as handles, locks and rivets are also represented on the structure, with the largest handle weighing 5,000 pounds.

Pushing Boundaries in Retail Design
Beyond its visual impact, the installation highlights a growing trend among luxury brands: transforming retail spaces into immersive, larger-than-life experiences. Instead of treating construction as an inconvenience, Louis Vuitton has turned it into an opportunity to reinforce its legacy and brand to take luxury signage design to a new level.
When the dust settles and the revamped flagship is finally unveiled, it’s safe to say Louis Vuitton’s presence in New York will be bigger and bolder than ever. Until then, its stack of trunks stands as a testament to the brand, ensuring it remains a landmark even while under wraps.
