Interior design plays a crucial role in setting the tone for business spaces, especially lobbies. A well-designed lobby can make a lasting first impression on visitors and clients. According to a study by the American Society of Interior Designers, a well-designed workplace, including the lobby areas, positively influences health, wellness, employee satisfaction and more. At 40 VISUALS, we understand the importance of impactful signage in these areas. Recently, we installed a custom fabric SEG lightbox in a lobby, transforming the space with vibrant visuals.

How Does SEG Fabric Work?

SEG, or silicone edge graphics, is a popular choice for high-quality displays. This signage solution involves printing graphics on fabric and sewing a silicone edge to the fabric, which fits into an SEG fabric frame, stretching the fabric drum-tight. The result is a smooth, frameless look that’s perfect for a variety of environments, including retail store signage, trade show displays and corporate offices. SEG fabric is known for its versatility, with its interchangeable signage features allowing for easy graphics changes to keep displays fresh and up to date.

Transforming Spaces With SEG Fabric Lightbox Displays

For this project, we installed a custom 87” x 104” wall-mounted SEG fabric lightbox, perfectly sized to fit the wall. The display is perimeter-lit, ensuring even and bright illumination of the large graphic. The extrusions of the frame were spliced, which made it possible to transport and ship the large frames more easily and cost-effectively. The featured high-resolution artwork is from The North Face, depicting a model wearing a jacket in the rain, printed on Premium Woven Backlit Fabric. This choice of SEG backlit fabric combined with dye-sublimated printing ensures vibrant colors and sharp details, making the graphic stand out up close and at a distance.

Installing Large SEG Lightboxes

The graphic install experts at Applied Graphics & Signs handled the installation of this lightbox. The first step involved assembling the frame, which came in 8 pieces of frame extrusions, two per side. Each side was connected with splice connectors while the corners were connected with corner connectors to seamlessly assemble the frame. Because of the height of the display, a vertical support bar was required to maintain the rigidity of the frame. A blockout backer fabric was added to ensure there are no light leaks from behind the display. The lightbox frame extrusions were pre-drilled, which allowed the lightbox to be anchored securely to the wall. After that, all that needed to be done was cut a small hole in the backer fabric for the wall plug and install the fabric. The display took the space from ordinary to extraordinary and immediately grabs attention to anyone walking by.

Direct Dye-Sublimated Printing for Silicone Edge Graphics

The fabric print for this lightbox was produced using direct-to-fabric dye-sublimation. Direct dye-sub printing involves a specialized process where designs are printed directly onto the fabric using water-based sublimation inks. The fabric, pre-coated to accept the inks, is fed through a printer where the inks are applied. The printed fabric is then passed through a heat press, where the high temperature causes the inks to turn into gas and bond permanently with the fabric fibers. This method results in vibrant, durable and fade-resistant graphics that are smooth and seamless, making it perfect for stunning displays with vivid colors and sharp details, and are even machine washable.
