What You Need to Know

Lay’s is making major changes to its iconic snacks, pledging to eliminate all artificial flavors and colors from its core products by the end of 2025. The overhaul affects the entire lineup, including Lay’s Classic, Baked, and Kettle Cooked varieties, as the brand responds to growing consumer demand for cleaner ingredients. Alongside this, Lay’s is reformulating recipes to reduce fat and switch to healthier oils — Baked Lay’s will now use olive oil, and the reduced-fat Kettle Cooked chips will transition to avocado oil instead of seed oils like corn and canola.

The ingredient shift coincides with Lay’s largest visual rebrand in nearly a century, designed to emphasize real ingredients and a more natural image. New packaging will feature photos of whole potatoes and fresh seasonings against rustic backgrounds, with brighter color schemes to reflect each flavor’s ingredients. The move comes amid nationwide pressure on food companies to drop synthetic additives, with Walmart, PepsiCo, and General Mills making similar commitments. While Lay’s changes mark a meaningful step toward transparency, health experts note that cleaner labels don’t necessarily make chips healthy — though the brand’s reformulations do signal a shift toward more mindful snacking.
